While both personal liability coverage and personal injury coverage may sound similar, they serve distinct purposes in protecting you when accidents occur. Personal liability coverage is usually already included in your home or auto insurance and will cover you for costs of injuries or property damages you are responsible for, while personal injury coverage is meant to cover you for the victim’s losses.

Personal Liability Insurance

The key difference with personal liability insurance is that this policy covers damages or expenses that you are responsible for. It also protects you when you are sued for the damage that was caused by you.

Personal Injury Insurance

In contrast, personal injury insurance addresses legal claims related to libel, defamation, or slander. This coverage handles expenses that are not related to bodily injury or property damage. For instance, it can cover costs arising from psychological damage, physical pain, or emotional distress following an incident. Personal Injury can occur in many forms and at any time. Having this coverage does not cost more than $20-25~ per policy period.

What Does Each Coverage Cover?

Personal Liability:

Personal Injury:

·       Medical expenses

·       Slander

·       Accidental damage to another person’s property

·       Related legal costs

·       Damage caused by pets

·       Wrongful eviction

·       Property damage expenses

·       False imprisonment

·       Injury to others on your property

·       Invasion of privacy

Should I Get Both Coverages?

As both these coverages cover significant expenses such as medical bills and lawsuits, having personal injury coverage paired along with personal liability coverage would be a good idea. Not only that, having personal liability coverage is required in most states, while only a few states require personal injury coverage. This combination provides comprehensive protection and helps prevent out-of-pocket costs in the event of an accident or legal issue.
